Im Schatten des Lichts – Pictures of Society

Following the recent exhibition The Aftermath at the Artrmx art association gallery, in which Marlini Wickramasinha depicted the silence after the catastrophe, Galerie Koppelmann now turns its attention to another facet of her oeuvre.

In the Shadow of Light depicts social scenes that capture life in the moment and have the character of photographic snapshots. In Marlini Wickramasinha's social paintings, the moment itself becomes the subject. Scenes from anniversary parties, banquets, or sports events appear frozen, as if time had held its breath. A smile, a glance, a gesture or a movement that would otherwise vanish and float away in the stream of time are captured and condensed here, and at the same time detached, taking on new, unexpected meanings.

This creates a peculiar tension: the celebration seems familiar, yet there is always an underlying sense of uncertainty. The scene could change in an instant, the mood could be reversed. Closeness and distance, glamour and fragility exist side by side. 

The Aftermath and Im Schatten des Lichts (In the Shadow of Light) present a panorama that reveals the full range of an extraordinary artist: Marlini Wickramasinha paints both the traces of catastrophe and the transience of everyday life – yet always with the same consistency, clarity and topicality. Together, these exhibitions show us an artist whose paintings, even though she is over ninety years of age, are more relevant than ever.

Nach der Ausstellung The Aftermath im Kunstverein artrmx, in der Marlini Wickramasinha die Stille nach der Katastrophe ins Bild setzte, richtet die Galerie Koppelmann nun den Blick auf eine andere Facette ihres Oeuvres. Im Schatten des Lichts zeigt Gesellschaftsszenen, die das Leben im Augenblick einfangen – Feste, Bankette, Hochzeiten, Sportereignisse.

Diese Bilder tragen den Charakter fotografischer Momentaufnahmen. Ein Lächeln, ein Blick, eine Geste oder eine Bewegung, die sonst im Strom der Zeit verfliegen, erscheinen hier festgehalten, verdichtet und zugleich entrückt. In Schwarz, Weiß und unzähligen Grautönen verwandelt Wickramasinha das Flüchtige in eine neue Form von Dauer.

So entsteht eine eigentümliche Spannung: Das Fest wirkt vertraut, und doch schwingt immer eine Unsicherheit mit. Die Szene könnte im nächsten Moment kippen, die Stimmung sich ins Gegenteil verkehren. Nähe und Distanz, Glanz und Zerbrechlichkeit stehen dicht nebeneinander.

Mit The Aftermath und Im Schatten des Lichts ergibt sich ein Panorama, das die ganze Bandbreite einer beeindruckenden Malerin sichtbar macht: Marlini Wickramasinha malt sowohl die Spuren der Katastrophe als auch die Flüchtigkeit des Alltäglichen – stets mit derselben Konsequenz, Klarheit und Aktualität.
